About the Presenter: Virend K. Somers, MBChB, DPhil
Virend K. Somers, MBChB, DPhil, is a cardiologist and a Mayo Clinical Investigator in the Department of Cardiovascular Diseases at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. He is recognized with the distinction of a named Mayo professorship, the Alice Sheets Marriott Professorship. Dr. Somers earned his medical degree at the University of Natal in South Africa. He received an Oxford Nuffield Medical Fellowship to Oxford University where he obtained his Doctor of Philosophy degree. He then completed a residency in internal medicine and a cardiology fellowship at the University of Iowa. His translational research program focuses on an integrated approach to cardiometabolic control and vascular and adipocyte biology, in normal and disordered sleep. His program is funded by 3 NIH RO1 grants as well as grants from the AHA. His H-index is 111 with >70,000 citations.
He has received the Mayo Foundation Distinguished Investigator Award; the Czech Cardiology Society Libensky Gold Medal; the University of Iowa Distinguished Cardiovascular Scientist Award; the South African Society of Sleep Medicine Lifetime Achievement Award; the American Physiologic Society Robert M. Berne Distinguished Lectureship Award; the CHEST Distinguished Scientist Honor Lecturer in Cardiopulmonary Physiology; the University of Natal Malherbe Distinguished Achievement Award; and was named as the AHA Corcoran Memorial Lecturer. He has served on the Sleep Disorders Research Advisory Board of the NIH and has been elected to membership of the American Society of Clinical Investigation, American Association of Physicians and the Association of University Cardiologists.
