Learning Objectives:
- To analyze a clinical case illustrating the presentation and consequences of sleep-disordered breathing in post-stroke patients
- To understand the pathophysiology and prevalence of sleep-disordered breathing following ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke
- To explain the evidence supporting sleep apnea as an independent and modifiable risk factor for both incident and recurrent stroke
- To understand the effectiveness of CPAP therapy and other positive airway pressure modalities in reducing recurrent cerebrovascular events
- To identify appropriate screening tools and diagnostic approaches for detecting sleep apnea in the acute and subacute stroke population
- To become aware of innovative and emerging treatment options for obstructive sleep apnea, including PAP alternatives, neurostimulation, oral appliance therapies, and technology-enabled interventions
About the Presenter: Joyce K. Lee-Iannotti, MD, FAASM, FAAN
Joyce K. Lee-Iannotti, MD, FAASM, FAAN, is Professor of Neurology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix. She serves as Division Chief of the Barrow Comprehensive Sleep Medicine Center and Interim Division Chief of the Petznick Comprehensive Stroke Center at Barrow Neurological Institute.
Her clinical practice spans the full spectrum of sleep disorders, with particular expertise in REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) and sleep-wake disturbances in long COVID. Her research interests include RBD, narcolepsy, neuro-COVID syndromes, and the intersection of sleep apnea and stroke. She is also deeply committed to medical education and advocacy.
Dr. Lee-Iannotti serves on the AASM Focused Update Task Force on Diagnostic Testing for Adult OSA Guidelines, the Board of Directors of both the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and the AASM Foundation, and as Chair of the Sleep Section of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN).
