About the Presenter: Barbara Hutchinson, MD, PhD, FACC
Dr. Barbara Hutchinson is the President and Managing Partner of Chesapeake Cardiac Care in Bowie, Maryland. She earned her undergraduate degree in Chemistry and Biochemistry from the University of the West Indies in Trinidad. She migrated to the US and completed a PhD in Cardiovascular Pharmacology at Howard University, Washington, DC, before going to the University of Maryland Medical School, Baltimore, where she completed her medical degree. She went on to complete her Internal Medicine Residency and Cardiology Fellowship at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. She is certified in both cardiovascular medicine and sleep medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Dr. Hutchinson provides cardiovascular and sleep care in Bowie and recognizes the role that sleep plays in cardiovascular health. She is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the American Academy of Cardiovascular Sleep Medicine, Past President of the Association of Black Cardiologists, and currently sits on several medical advisory and non-profit boards.
Dr. Hutchinson has been involved in clinical trials for over 30 years serving as clinical research coordinator, subinvestigator and principal investigator. Areas of clinical research have included congestive heart failure, hyperlipidemia, atrial fibrillation, hypertension, myocardial infarction, and coronary artery disease. She has several publications and has presented both nationally and internationally on cardiovascular disease and sleep. She is currently the Medical Director of Flourish Research, Bowie.
Dr. Hutchinson is passionate about preventing untimely death from heart disease by addressing and treating all risk factors including sleep. She also wants to bridge the gap in clinical trials to ensure that study populations reflect the real-world population for drugs and devices by being intentional about inclusion of underrepresented groups in all facets of clinical research.
